Your hydraulic power steering system can drain as much as hp from your engine and cost you somewhere between mpg of fuel. A hydraulic power steering unit consumes more energy than your car's air conditioner. Only wind resistance and road friction consume more energy. While we Street Rodders do care about fuel mileage, the horsepower loss may or may not be of concern, given most street rods are overpowered. Invented by Francis W.

Davis and George Jessup in the '20s, hydraulic power steering made its first commercial debut in Large vehicles were in demand and steering those boats could be a real workout. The hydraulic power steering solution was based on torque assist being applied to the steering box based on the amount of force applied to the steering wheel. Since the hydraulic pump was directly connected to the engine, energy was consumed even when no steering assist was being requested.

The system worked, but it was far from efficient. The system utilized a brushed DC electric motor and an electronic power control module. Since that time, manufacturers of EPS units have utilized switched reluctance SR motors, and brushless permanent magnet BPM motors all with new levels of efficiency. All of the major automobile manufacturers are introducing EPS in more models each year.

Electronic Power Steering - The Path Of Least Resistance

The bottom line is hydraulic power steering units are old technology and eventually will be replaced.

An EPS unit increases fuel mileage and horsepower, eliminates the big ugly hydraulic pump, the belt, the leaky hydraulic hoses, and the need for power steering fluid. Unisteer Performance Products, designers and manufacturers of aftermarket rack-and-pinion steering assemblies for street rods and muscle cars, recently introduced Electra-Steer. The column drive Electra-Steer utilizes the newest technology being used by the major automotive manufactures to replace hydraulic power steering and Electra-Steer EPS is now available for street rods and any vehicle weighing 2, pounds or less.

Unisteer Performance also offers a complete EPS column based on an ididit steering column; either way, the result is a significant reduction of manual steering effort. Since most street rods do not utilize an onboard computer, the engineers at Unisteer Performance Products simplified the EPS control module to operate on steering input force torque.

The EPS control module then commands the motor to provide appropriate assist based on the steering input force. In other words, the less steering input force the less assist is required, like at higher speeds. As a retrofit kit or a complete steering column, the unit is fast and fairly easy to install. Everything is included, and Electra-Steer connects to your 12V power source. In addition to the EPS drive module and the EPS control module, the kit includes a wiring harness, a fuse holder, complete instructions, and an LED light that is used as a code reader should the unit malfunction.In motor vehiclesa power steering system helps drivers steer the vehicle by augmenting steering effort needed to turn the steering wheelmaking it easier for the vehicle to turn or maneuver.

Hydraulic or electric actuators add controlled energy to the steering mechanism, so the driver can provide less effort to turn the steered wheels when driving at typical speeds, and reduce considerably the physical effort necessary to turn the wheels when a vehicle is stopped or moving slowly.

Power steering can also be engineered to provide some artificial feedback of forces acting on the steered wheels.

Hydraulic power steering systems for cars augment steering effort via an actuator, a hydraulic cylinder that is part of a servo system. These systems have a direct mechanical connection between the steering wheel and the linkage that steers the wheels.

This means that power-steering system failure to augment effort still permits the vehicle to be steered using manual effort alone. Electric power steering systems use electric motors to provide the assistance instead of hydraulic systems. As with hydraulic types, power to the actuator motor, in this case is controlled by the rest of the power steering system.

Other power steering systems such as those in the largest off-road construction vehicles have no direct mechanical connection to the steering linkage; they require electrical power. Systems of this kind, with no mechanical connection, are sometimes called " drive by wire " or "steer by wire", by analogy with aviation's " fly-by-wire ".

In this context, "wire" refers to electrical cables that carry power and data, not thin wire rope mechanical control cables. Some construction vehicles have a two-part frame with a rugged hinge in the middle; this hinge allows the front and rear axles to become non-parallel to steer the vehicle. Opposing hydraulic cylinders move the halves of the frame relative to each other to steer.

The first power steering system on an automobile was apparently installed in by a man with the surname of Fitts, but little else is known about him. Robert E. Twyford, a resident of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvaniaincluded a mechanical power steering mechanism as part of his patent U.

Heavier vehicles, as are common in some countries, would be extremely difficult to maneuver at low speeds, while vehicles of lighter weight may not need power assisted steering at all.

By eliminating the hydraulic pump and steering box, a significant—and always present—parasitic drag on the engine is removed. While the Toyota electric power steering system we're about to dive into is rated for up to 60 amps of current draw, most of the time it will pull a tenth of that as you go about typical driving, and the battery is able to compensate for much of that current draw before it passes the load to the alternator.

This means that you can retain one-finger power steering while freeing up a little extra horsepower and maybe even a little fuel mileage. Plus, it removes a lot of plumbing, flammable fluids, and weight out of the engine bay. Electric power steering is an incredibly simple system that uses a torque sensor to measure driver input steering position, torque, and velocityan electronic control unit ECU to interpret that data, and a beer-can-sized electric motor on a worm-drive to directly assist the steering column though some systems, like the aforementioned NSX, place the motor on the steering rack instead.

While not necessary for this particular swap, the EPS ECU also takes data from the CAN-bus to interpret vehicle speed and stability control information into how much assist it produces—mostly to provide extra boost at low speed to ease parking lot maneuvers, while lessening the boost at higher speeds so that the steering is less sensitive and tracks straighter with less input.

The cars were prolific, and with 15 years of production, abundant in junkyards today; but they're not as brain-dead as the Toyota electric power steering when removed from the car. For the Toyota system, however, it uses a fail safe mode DTC U and U when it can't see the CAN-bus or vehicle speed sensor, setting its assist like it would at 43 mph.

This sounds like a bodge, but pioneers of this swap have reported thousands of miles of usage with no issues. This makes the Toyota electric power steering entirely stand-alone, simplifying the swap further while reducing costs by eliminating the need for extra parts.

We're going to be a little brief here, as each install is unique to the project it's going into, but we'll give you the skinny on what the Toyota electric power steering needs to operate.

First and foremost, the factory fuse is 60 amps, so we'd recommend 8-gauge or larger wiring for the primary 12v and ground wires that power the ECU and motor.

While this current draw is one of the highest you'll see in most automotive systems, electric power steering operates at about a tenth of that in typical operation. Think of it like a hydraulic system, it builds maximum pressure and stresses the system most when the wheel is against something, like a curb or the steering-stops themselves, and cannot steer further.

Next, the only other hook-up needed is to a switched 12v source that turns on with the ignition. Once wired, you'll hear the ECU click its main power relay, and within a few seconds, the motor will come alive. You may notice that without any connection to a steering system, that the motor does basically nothing. Mounting the Toyota electric power steering column is project-dependent, but it comes with two very usable factory mounts for 12mm hardware. The lower mount is a simple, using a Delrin-isolated cross bolt that doubles as a pivot for the tilt; and the upper mount incorporates a sliding lock for tilt.

What you've got to engineer is the adaption to your factory or aftermarket steering shaft and column to connect the Toyota electric power steering column to your machine's steering wheel and tie rods.

We've seen a handful of solutions for this, but it's similar to the skills necessary to shorten and install any other steering column. Some folks machine or carefully grind the Toyota steering shaft to accept a D-shaft coupler, like what's found in ididit's universal columns. Others have bored the Toyota shaft out while turning the diameter of the factory steering shafts down to fit inside, then press-fitting and welding the assembly together. You'll also have to "de-power" your hydraulic steering box or rackor use a manual-steering unit to complete the swap, but this is required for any electric power steering column conversion.

Would I recommend it - yes! Is it a hotly debated topic- Yes! I found the turning forces necessary to drive around town, coupled with trying to shift, etc, was too much for me. If you have larger tires, that also adds to the problem.

If you have a spouse that also drives the Fiero, I think they will also appreciate the improvement.

With the adjustments available to modulate the amount of Power Steering effort available, you can adjust it to your liking. Doing the Electric PS conversion was much cheaper than the Hydraulic style of PS conversion, and does not require a re-alignment after install. It is a hassle working up under the dash, and does require some welding, but still easily doable in a weekend.
