If you need to replace your 12Ax7 tubes, you will undoubtedly come across the ECC83 tube. This can lead to quite a bit of confusion and uncertainty about which one to purchase. Some people might worry about whether or not you can substitute the ECC83 for a 12Ax7. Many guitar shops will only carry one brand of preamp tube. The ECC83 tube will perform the same as the 12Ax7.

This type of tube powers the preamp section of most tube amps but plenty of effect pedals, microphone preamps, mixing boards, and other audio equipment also use the 12Ax7 tube to get more vintage-sounding tones.

Preamp tubes have very long life spans and very rarely need replacing. They deal with tiny voltages and currents, as compared to power tubes. They are therefore much less likely to overheat or fail during the lifetime of the amplifier. For any purpose besides audio amplification, the transistor is better than the vacuum tube because it is much smaller, consumes less power, gives off less heat, rarely fails, and is cheap to make.

Clipping happens when a signal going into the tube or transistor is more than it was designed to accept. Clipping happens quite often when a guitarist strikes the strings, and the subtle differences in the way the tube or the transistor react to it can have a significant effect on the overall sound of the amplifier. That said, there are also subtle differences in tubes of the same type and even mfr, which are due to what is known in the industry as "running changes" and yet there are often no changes in product description. In the example which you supplied, I would venture to guess that the order of the ECC and the 88 simply signifies which version has gold plated pins and which does not, unless both types show up with gold pins.

This might not belong to later models though. In basic functions they are identical though. ECC88 just happens to be the european name for the 6DJ8. Both are customer versions. Also, the E88CC is exactly the same as the And vice versa. For audio use: PRO-versions don't necessarily sound better, but they easily could.

In no way are they connected to the quality of the original Amperex 6DJ8s. It's very misleading, but given that they own the trademark, no one can really do much about it except educate each other.

Stay away from these, IMHO. Vintage Amperex are some of the best 6DJ8s available considering they invented that type of tube Have many pairs for sale.

OK, I'm no expert, but I'll try to help The short answer is no, they are not interchangeable. It has a low ish internal resistance approx. ECC88 mu amplification factor is rated at ECC88 has a 6. ECC83 is an older design audio low frequency twin triode. It has a rather high internal resistance approx. ECC83 mu is rated at very high.

ECC83 heater may be wired for 6. If your ECC83 is wired for That probably would not be good. So while the two tubes have a similar base and pin-out arrangement, they are not substitutes for each other.
